RheFFO WG

RheFFO WG members

In the RheFFO WG, stability is needed at, say, a 3- to 5-year time scale or longer, to allow for projects involving the members to be be conceived, to get funding, to develop, to be done, and to be written up. Yet the RheFFO WG is a living structure, and members will inevitably come and go, and change function.

Composition of the WG.
A inner WG of around 20 is envisaged, supporting a less defined extended WG. The current inner WG has been shaped largely by the present proposal for endorsement to the Science Committee for Ocean Research (SCOR). SCOR, by its own definition, is concerned with ocean research, but we hope that RheFFO will also be recognized, endorsed and funded by other bodies focussed more on rheology, surface science, biofouling and corrosion, biotechnology, biofilms, desalination and so on, extending into non-saline systems, often with a more industrial or business-oriented approach. We hope that the ocean-commons and the innovation-and-business approach will be synergistic. As RheFFO develops, its different proposals and projects may come to involve different, overlapping subgoups of colleagues.

SCOR's approach is strongly to encourage gender balance, inclusion of colleagues from developing states, and to discourage subgroups of colleageus who have already worked closely together. Other sponsoring bodies may have different critieria, and this shall be addressed when the time comes.

- Core WG
The present list of core members is the same as that given for the 20 members and associate members in the 2015 proposal for SCOR endorsement. However, we have new members:

ZHANG Dun

and Biofouling,
Qingdao, P.R. China
Full professor and head of the Key Laboratory of Marine Biofouling and Protection, Zhang Dun's lab includes an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering , an expert of Chinese Academy of Sciences "Hundred Talents", seven researchers, four key research personnel (including associate and assistant researcher), three post-doctorals and many PhDs. Zhang Dun will guide research by the staff and students of the laboratory towards the research aims of RheFFO WG, particulerly in relation to "green" (non-toxic) anti-biofouling, modified by the sculpturing and other physico-chemical properties of surfaces, including biomimicry.

Note by Ian Jenkinson. We received Zhang Dun's agreement to be part of RHeFFO just too late to include her name in the proposal before it was submitted to SCOR. I believe strongly that on endorsement by SCOR she should be included in the endorsed WG.
